Staying safe from suicide – top-up training

Supporting individuals who are self-harming or experiencing suicidal ideation - best practice guidance

This training opportunity is for those who have already attended the training course delivered by Simon Chapman on this subject in July and October 2023, or have had recent training on NICE Guidelines 224. Participants will have the opportunity to refresh their knowledge and will also learn about how the most recent updates from the NHS on best practice should inform their practice.

Supporting individuals who are self-harming or experiencing suicidal ideation can be a stressful and uncomfortable experience for therapists and pastoral carers. This CPD training, based on the latest guidance, will help participants to reflect on their own reactions to self-harm and suicidal ideation before considering some of the common reasons for self-harming behaviour and suicidal ideation in society today.

With a focus on ‘staying safe’ a detailed explanation of how to respond sensitively to client disclosures of self-harm or suicidal ideation, whilst comprehensively assessing and managing the potential risk that these disclosures bring with them, is a key focus of the day.

Participants will learn how to complete a detailed Client-Centred Assessment Interview, to help identify specific risks that their client is facing, and a ‘Staying Safe Plan’, which can be used in their own areas of work and ministry as an intervention to help keep clients safe. Ethical issues around professional confidentiality and duty of care will also be explored.

This course will be delivered by Simon Chapman, a CBT and couples' therapist. Simon delivers lectures and training courses in a university, schools, the armed forces and to groups of counsellors. These topics vary and include mental health awareness training, self-harm, and the safe management of individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts. Simon’s contribution to public health has been acknowledged and he is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH).

The delivery method of the course includes teaching presentations, interspersed with group discussion and case study examples to facilitate learning. Practical applications of the training will also be discussed in detail. Please note that the focus of the training is on adult self-harm and suicidal ideation and is therefore most suitable for therapists and pastoral carers who work with clients aged 18 and over.

This course is suitable for student counsellors, counsellors, counselling supervisors, pastoral carers and pastoral supervisors.

The session will not be recorded.
