Pastoral accompaniment at the end of life

Pastoral care training

Pastoral accompaniment at the end of life

The purpose of this training session is to equip and enable pastoral carers and ministers to accompany those within our churches and communities who are at the end of their life.

This training session is suitable for pastoral carers, community chaplains, and church ministers who would like to understand the experience of end of life and how pastoral care can support the process of dying well. Some prior training and experience in pastoral care is useful to engage with this workshop.

Note: This training has the potential to trigger challenging emotions and is not recommended for pastoral carers who have been recently bereaved.

Training objectives

The training focuses on end-of-life pastoral care within a church community, and also for those in the wider community who may seek support and comfort from the church at this time in their lives.

The training includes:

  • Understanding the holistic process of dying as a physiological, emotional, relational and spiritual event.
  • Dying well and the role of advance planning.
  • How pastoral care can support the process of dying well.
